Faith in the Midst of Doubt: Genesis 15:1-18

Monday of the Second Week in Lent
Reading: Genesis 15:1-18

Struggling to Believe
Doubt is a struggle that touches every believer at some point. We ask, “Will God really come through for me?” or “Can I truly trust His promises?” Abraham, the father of faith, knew this struggle well. In Genesis 15, he is growing old and still has no son, despite God’s promise that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. In his moment of doubt, God reassures him with a covenant—a binding promise that He will fulfill His word.

This covenant ceremony, where animals are split and God alone passes through, was a dramatic statement in the ancient world. Normally, both parties in an agreement would walk through, signifying that they would be faithful or face the consequences. But here, God alone walks through, declaring that He Himself would bear the cost of any failure. This foreshadows Jesus, who would later take the punishment for our unfaithfulness, securing the covenant for us once and for all.

Trusting God’s Promises
When doubts arise, we can learn from Abraham. First, bring your concerns to God—He does not condemn our questions but answers them with His faithfulness. Next, remember that His promises do not depend on our ability but on His character. Just as He upheld the covenant with Abraham, He will uphold His promises to us. Finally, fix your eyes on Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of God’s covenant. Through Him, we have the assurance that God’s promises are “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Transform Our Heart Through Prayer
Lord, in moments of doubt, help me to trust in Your promises. Remind me that You are faithful even when I struggle to believe. Anchor my heart in the certainty of Your word, and help me to walk by faith, not by sight. Holy Spirit, strengthen my trust in You today. Amen.
